Pat Files For Revit

  1. There are actually a whole bunch of.pat files you can download for FREE (www.cadhatch.com for example) so if you’re after something in particular you can search the net, download then import into Revit. However, if you really really want to make a custom hatch pattern, here is the easiest way I have found: Creating custom.pat files.

Need new hatch patterns for Revit?

11/11/2018

Hatch patterns are incredibly useful graphics that communicate that materials used on your drawings. Like Autocad, Revit Architecture comes with a handful of hatch patterns. Called 'Filled Patterns' in Revit, these can be found under the Manage tab, Additional Settings and Fill Patterns. These patterns come with two types: Drafting and Model. 'Drafting' patterns are most often used for cross sections. These types of patterns do not have a size and change depending on scale being used in the Revit view. 'Model' patterns are typically used for surfaces, therefore appear on plans and elevations. It won't take long for you to outgrow the fill patterns available in Revit. You will then have the choice of creating additional patterns and/or uploading new patterns into Revit. Follow these steps to get your started:
  1. Custom Hatch Patterns
    1. If unable to find an appropriate hatch pattern for your materials in Revit, users can create their own with Manage tab / Materials
    2. The Graphics tab of the Materials Browser contains parameters for Surface Pattern which control hatch patterns in Revit. Two levels of hatch can be added to your elements:
      1. Surface Pattern / Foreground (choose pattern and color)
      2. Surface Pattern / Background (choose pattern and color)
      3. If Surface Pattern / Foreground / Pattern = Solid (using a Drafting not Model pattern), then this will be the only pattern that appears
  1. When a pattern is chosen, users can either select Drafting (used for sections) or Model (used for plans, elevations, RCP, etc.) patterns.
  2. Use the following steps to create simple hatch patterns within Revit
    1. Select new hatch at bottom of Fill Patterns menu
    2. Use Basic option in menu provided to create a pattern, create a new pattern name and choose OK
    3. Use Custom option and browse button load a .pat (see pattern files below). If the .pat file contains multiple hatch patterns, choose a single pattern from the list provided. Adjust the import scale as needed (i.e. try values of 1, 10, 100, etc.). When complete, create a new pattern name and choose OK
  3. An alternative to loading fill patterns is to copy the fill pattern from another currently open Revit file.
    1. Open new project and Revit file containing pattern required
    2. Within the new project, use Manage / Transfer Project Standards, Copy from=name of Revit file with patterns, choose Check None, select Fill Patterns from list provided and choose OK. This option will copy all patterns from source file.
    3. Another method is to apply the hatch pattern to an element in the source file (i.e. small floor area) and copy/paste this element into your new file. Only the single pattern will be copied into your new Revit file.
  4. Pattern files (.pat) format for Revit
    1. Pattern files (.pat) must be correctly formatted to work within Revit
    2. Open the pattern file(select, right-click and choose Edit with Notepad…)
    3. Each block of code must start with either of the following:
      1. * (followed by the name of the hatch and a description)
      2. ;%TYPE=Model or Drafting (depending on which type of hatch is required in Revit)
      3. The remainder is programming required to create the hatch pattern (do not change)
      4. Modify the file as needed and Save the file
  5. Modify the file as needed and Save the file
